Laurel Harris
Laurel is originally from Rexberg, Idaho. She earned a degree
in elementary ed at BYU and then a Master's in Educational Library
Systems and Media Resources from the University of Utah.
She recently read Mirrorscape by Mike Wilkes. (Beehive Book
Award Recipient) Currently she is reading White Crow by Marcus
Sedgwick and listening to Cryer's Cross by Lisa McCann. She
loves mysteries and audio books. She feels that students like
audiobooks for many of the same reasons adults do. “The
actors can put vocabulary into a better context for students,
including special education students, for better understanding”.
Having just read Blood Red Road by Moira Young, she is recommending
it to the Hungar Games crowd.
Jordan High School has a High Functioning Autistic unit. There
are more special education students at Jordan High than any
other school in the district. There are currently only about
1500 students there but when Laurel first came, there were about
2400.
She is very proud of her large Spanish collection. It spans
several sacks.
She works hard to find intriguing ways to help the teachers
find time to bring their students down by integrating her curriculum,
like orienting the students and teachers to Destiny, with the
classroom teacher curriculum, like WWI poets and trench warfare.
Laurel appreciates the support she gets from the school and
the community.
