This beautiful ceramics wall was a collaboration between the
Library Media and Art departments, specifically the Ceramics
courses taught by Shalice Marx. For 3 years, 2007-2010, students
made art tiles in the form of book covers, spines and pages.
Students came to the library to scout out favorite
titles or graphics and then returned to the art room to create
the tiles. A large 3-D centerpiece was created by the advanced
students. Students continue to come back to view their handiwork.

Fawn Morgan
comes from a family of educators who are all life-long learners.
One grandmother was an elementary school teacher, one a genealogical
researcher, and both her grandfathers were in the newspaper business.
Her father and two brothers were teacher/principals. Fawn graduated
from USU as an English major with an Instructional Media minor
and a secondary teaching certificate. Her favorite Christmas present
ever was a set of World Book Encyclopedia when she was twelve.
Layton High Library is
filled with light after decades of inhabiting a bat-cave-like
room, they now enjoy a new HUGE library with lots of natural light,
multiple use seating, super sound system, and lots of up-to-date
technology. They still have room for books and a museum of antique
equipment. Layton High has a culturally diverse population and
a supportive faculty which allows their teaching library to thrive.
Last year the library averaged over 5,000 patrons a month, most
of which, obviously, are students. See bottom left for
information about the beautiful ceramic wall in the library.
Layton High Library hosts
the Realms Club (medieval battle-role play), Board Games Club
(we have a giant chess set in the library) and the occasional
Anime Club (interests with anything anime or manga). At the time
of this interview, there was a ring set up in the library for
Robot Wars.
Fawn usually has a stack of books
and a Nook at her bedside. She is a newspaper addict, requiring
that she reads at least one cover to cover daily. She is currently
reading The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory and The Imperial
Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War by James Bradley.
The books that made the most long lasting
impact on Fawn are: Nancy Drew series, The Once
and Future King by T.H. White, Kim by Rudyard Kipling, Les Miserables
by Victor Hugo, and Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein.
Her favorite contemporary genres are historical fiction, fantasy
and science fiction.
Fawns hopes for the library
“To maintain currency both in its collection and technology
– that’s going to be difficult if the economy and
legislative viewpoint don’t improve. I hope to uphold a
tradition of a warm and inviting atmosphere, one with lots of
laughter, inquiry and learning.”
Over the past year Fawn has
put in many volunteer hours serving on a committee which created
a proposal to update the Utah Secondary Library Media Core Curriculum.
The update team was composed of six members: Sharyl
Smith, Cindy Dunn, Cynthia Moyle, Fawn Morgan, Julie Atwood, and
Sarah Herron. More than a dozen professionals statewide served
as readers.
