To describe DawnAnn Bullough’s Wasatch Elementary Library
as eclectic does not encompass the collection of artifacts displayed
on and around her shelves. Giant bugs adorn the insect section,
a trike and wagon indicate travel, and a huge brain in a jar
reminds students “Your brain on books”. (It’s
huge!)
DawnAnn says it’s not just the reading she loves about
her job, but the teaching moments in the reading too. As she
reads from Palace Beautiful by Sarah
DeFord Williams, she tells her students that she was a struggling
reader. She explains that good readers are PART of the story,
posing questions, looking for connections. The students know
and recognize the setting from Palace Beautiful because it takes
place in their neighborhood.
DawnAnn wants students to feel welcome and comfortable. She
has study hall @ 7:00 A.M. to help make sure students are ready
for their day. In April, she holds Library Week. The kids chose
a favorite story book character and become that character. Students
and Parents attend an evening adventure filled with unusual
people and beasts.
DawnAnn is from Ohio. She majored in dance. In order to get
her secondary degree she traveled in a dance troupe to Europe.
She married, had children, and started volunteering and subbing
in her childrens’ classrooms.
As a library technology teacher, DawnAnn is careful and sensitive
about each kid. She serves the community and supports the teachers
by instructing the students in research skills. She hopes that
her enthusiasm for books like Little House on The Prairie and
The Wizard of Oz series helps encourage students to Read and
Grow their brains!
