Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Explore the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and develop advocacy strategies to be used with community stakeholders and elected Utah officials in order to ensure the inclusion of school libraries in the upcoming funding budget. Think creatively of allies interested in School Libraries and approach them with reasons to support ESSA funding for libraries using ESSA terminology and actual examples from your library in your elevator speech. In both your elevator speech and letters, don’t forget the “ask”. Ask them for their support!

Now is the time to let the Utah State Board of Education and our legislature know how important school libraries are to student achievement. USBE is currently deciding on the budget allocations for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Deputy Superintendent Rich Nye has invited any of us to participate in the workshops to create the state plan. Please sign up to participate in this process through the State website: http://schools.utah.gov/assessment/ESSA.aspx.
Utah's ESSA Draft Plan is now available for comment! Please use this document when filling out the Survey. Please support funding for school librarians and library resources by responding as soon as possible. The deadline for responses is July 7th!
